An Edgartown man died in an apparent drowning while swimming in the Edgartown Great Pond Saturday afternoon, state police have confirmed.

The victim was identified by the state police Sunday as Clinton Griesser, 32, of Edgartown.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing. Cape and Island assistant district attorney Tara L. Miltimore said Monday that there was nothing at the time to suggest the cause of death was anything other than accidental. She said the matter remained under investigation, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner had accepted jurisdiction of the case.

State police trooper Paul Sullivan told the Gazette Saturday that emergency responders were called to the Edgartown Great Pond near Wilson’s Landing in Turkeyland Cove at about 4:45 p.m. Mr. Griesser went into the water and did not come up, he said. After about five minutes other people who were with him called 911.

Wilson’s Landing is the town landing, situated on a cove of the Great Pond.

Edgartown police, state police, and the Edgartown fire department responded to the scene.

Mr. Griesser was found and taken to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:30 p.m. Trooper Sullivan said.

A memorial fund has been established for Mr. Griesser's family at gofundme.com/2m7kcn7g.

Oh my God. I didn't know him long at all but he was very nice to me. I'm so sorry, praying for him.
