Oak Bluffs firefighters extinguished a fast-moving fire on State Beach Monday night, with no injuries or severe damage reported.

Fire Chief John Rose said the fire was started by fireworks.

The fire department responded to reports of a fire along the barrier beach near the Camp Jabberwocky parking area at about 9:30 p.m. Chief Rose said. The fire was about 300 feet by 100 feet wide and was moving quickly, he said, with winds of about 15 to 20 miles per hour.

Four engine companies and a rescue truck responded to the scene, he said, and it took about 30 minutes to extinguish the fire and clean up. Chief Rose added that it took awhile for the firefighters to drag the hose down the beach.

Chief Rose said there was no damage except for beach grass that burned. Fire trucks parked off the road and traffic was not affected, he said.

He said the individual setting off the fireworks stuck around so officials could get his name and information. Chief Rose said he had a talk with the individual and he did not expect that charges would be filed. His name was not being released.

Doing anything with fireworks or fire around here right now is a risky thing! But: Congratulations to the unnamed individual for having the strength of character to stick around and confess.

Chief Rose is the fire chief and would have zero authority regarding 'charges.' There are police chiefs & police dept's that handle the law.
