Lemonade stands are a longstanding summer tradition for young entrepreneurs. Diana and Nicki Masseur of Chilmark and New York city have taken the idea one step further, setting up a stand this past weekend to raise money for the Gay Head Light relocation effort.
Nicki, 7, and Diana, 10, set up a stand Saturday on North Road selling fruit salad, cold drinks, and homemade cookies, brownies, and other treats to passing cars, bikers, and walkers. The girls raised $142, all of which they will donate to the Save the Gay Head Lighthouse Fund.
“They are committed to helping close the gap on the remaining needed funds for the restoration and relocation of the lighthouse,” their mom, Ellen Vagelos Masseur, told the Gazette.
Their hard work will go toward an Islandwide effort to preserve the Gay Head Light, the 1856 brick lighthouse that was moved earlier this year because it was threatened by erosion. The initial fundraising goal of $3 million was reached this spring, but an additional $400,000 is needed to cover unforseen expenses.
