Connect to End Violence will hold its fourth annual seawall event this weekend in which men take a stand against domestic and sexual violence against women.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, men are invited to stand on the Vineyard Haven seawall holding a poster indicating a woman they wish to honor, showing a unified stance against domestic violence and sending a message that the majority of Island men do not tolerate violence against women.
The event is an initiative of Connect to End Violence’s Vineyard Men for Abuse Prevention group, which was founded in 2012 to bring together men who want to build a safe community for their loved ones.
Connect to End Violence offers a 24-hour crisis hotline at 508-696-7233 and also offers free and confidential services including short term counseling, court advocacy, and referral services. In fiscal year 2015, Connect provided services to 223 clients.
“One in three women will be beaten, raped or abused during their lifetime,” Tisbury policeman and Connect volunteer Max Sherman said in a press release. “While the Island is immune to a multitude of issues, domestic violence unfortunately is not one of them.”
For more information or to register for the seawall event, contact Sara Leandro, a domestic violence and rape crisis counselor at MVCS, at 508-684-8074 ext. 102 or [email protected].

Considering 48% of domestic
BS OBConsidering 48% of domestic violence arrests are for women when will there be a seawall event where women take a stand against domestic violence? Considering it's much more difficult for a man to come out and admit a woman has abused him those stats are probably higher.
