In an effort to improve communication with Islanders, the Steamship Authority will hold a special public meeting Tuesday, March 10, at the regional high school’s performing arts center.
The Steamship Authority board of governors holds public meetings monthly throughout the year, including two meetings on both of the islands. Most of the meetings take place on the Cape, but ferry fares can be waived for island residents who wish to attend.
The idea for a special meeting came up in January in the midst of public outcry over rate increases that went into effect this year. At a Dukes County commission meeting in January, Vineyard Steamship Authority governor Marc Hanover strongly defended the Steamship Authority against an online petition calling for the repeal or suspension of the increases, but agreed that communication between the company and the public could be improved.
Public concerns have also focused on the cost of several capital projects that are in the works, including a new terminal in Woods Hole.
At the special meeting, “the focus will be the new terminal and the concerns people have,” said county commission chairman Leon Brathwaite, who will facilitate the meeting.
At its regular meeting in January, the Steamship Authority board responded to the petition, with boat line management standing by the rate increases. Several citizens that attended the meeting indicated a need for greater transparency and more information about how the company operates.
The Steamship Authority board of governors’ next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 10, at 9:30 a.m. in Woods Hole. The special meeting on the Vineyard will begin at 6 p.m.

I agree with John, why not on
Jack A. West TisburyI agree with John, why not on a weekend. And, why not before a scheduled board meeting? If the Board of Governors really wanted public input, they wouldn't make their board meeting just before their "public outreach" meeting that evening? They would make their board after, so that they could share the public input with their board. The steamship authority can't seem to do anything right.
Be prepared I think alot of
Ken EdgartownBe prepared I think alot of people will show up. Alot of us arent happy with the grand projects over the last 20 years that have driven up costs. Parking lots are half empty like the boats. All this expense is for 3 months maybe 4 or 5 of tourists and 2nd home owners.Usually depends on the weather. We used to just have standby and everyone stood in line.So mainly the question is has it be all been worth it.
Maybe this time Mr.
sue tsiburyMaybe this time Mr. Braithwaite will let everyone talk and not cut them off like he did at the County Commissioners meeting. I thought he was kinda rude at some points during that meeting.

Marie Laursen TisburyThis was planned so that as many people could attend as possible. Unfortunately there is no one given day or time that would satisfy everyone. Perhaps you could send a letter with a friend to be read aloud if you can't go.
In the spirit of transparency
Jack A. West TisburyIn the spirit of transparency, and increased communication, let's hope that the meeting gets video taped and a link provided on the Steamship Authority website.
