Presidential Vacation Ends on Quiet Note

President Obama’s 15-day Martha’s Vineyard vacation came to an end Sunday night.

As the motorcade made the trip through the West Tisbury village just after darkness had fallen, a few onlookers stood waving their arms. Otherwise all was quiet on a late summer night. The President boarded Marine One at the Vineyard airport 8:29 p.m. and made the short hop to the Coast Guard air station in Bourne on Cape Cod, where he and Mrs. Obama shook hands with a group of officers from the Coast Guard and Air National Guard before boarding Air Force One for the trip back to Washington, D.C.

The President spent his last day on the Vineyard tucked out of sight in Chilmark where his family had been renting a home overlooking the north shore for the past two weeks.

The president’s vacation this year was marked by turmoil in the world and also closer to home, and he held a number of press briefings from the Vineyard: on escalating tensions and subsequent air strikes in Iraq, on the shooting in Ferguson, Mo., and on the murder of a U.S. journalist who had been kidnapped in Syria. In the final days of his vacation he came under strong criticism in the press for being so visible on the golf course with so many crises going on around him.

Compared with past vacations, the President was less visible this summer, his fifth vacation on the Island during his presidency. He ventured out to play golf frequently but went out for dinner and other activities less frequently. There have been fewer photographs of him.

On Sunday Lindsey Morris Provost and her husband were biking in the state forest in West Tisbury and came across a bit of public art created by some unknown artist: the U.S. Constitution and 10 amendments written out neatly in chalk on the bike path.

She and her husband carried a ladder through the woods and down the bike path to take pictures.

“I’m unsure of who took the time to do this but I assume it was in hopes of it being seen by the President,” Ms. Provost wrote in an email to the Gazette.

It is to bad that this president shredded the real one. I heard the authors were a couple college aged girls. So glad they did this, so glad Ms. Provost and her husband went thu the trouble to get the picture I hope it goes viral and am glad and surprised the gazette published it.

Unfortunately if the President did come by the writings on the bike path he most likely would have ignored them and run rough-shod over them.

Another example of how partisan hyperbolic rhetoric is affecting our politics. Unfortunately, under this President, the opposition party has taken it to extraordinary new lows. While Obama has painstakingly ended 2 wars not of his making, presided over unprecedented job creation, given equal rights for all Americans, repealed DODT, and killed the worlds No1 terrorist, his Repub critics could only come up with labeling him a foreigner and liar over the last 6 years.

Given our do-nothing Congress, I'm glad he's trying to do SOMETHING. Thank you, Obama!

So glad they came, the Obamas are admirable people and a credit to our country. I hope they enjoyed the Vineyard this summer.

Anniebelle, NC - Do you think for one second that he did not enjoy his vacation?

BTW, what can you tell me that gives him the right for such a Vacation and what exactly continues to impress you about what he had done for our country in any positive way?

We are down here surrounded by honorable Marine Corps active duty military personal and Drill Instructors training new recruits who are just totally disgusted with having him as their /our Commander in Chief!
Morale is in the toilet and the Drill instructors are doing their absolute best as always to still produce the finest men and women to protect and defend our country without question for what it seems for a very ungrateful Nation!

It saddens us to have to stand by and watch our country headed down a dismal path that we have no control to try to abort.

If the right would move a little closer to the center, play nicer, and identify an electable candidate ya might get somewhere. At least this administration is trying to get us out of the previous administrations dirty messes.

Not all of us on the Vineyard are liberal lapdogs to the Golfer-in-Chief. His behavior of playing golf 10 minutes after making the statement about Foley's beheading was so outrageous that even Maureen Dowd had to slam it in the New York Times. It's shameful that he'd rather play golf with NBA stars than engage in helping us navigate these very dangerous time at home and abroad.

So what are you thoughts on a President who sets up a media photo op of himself landing an airplane on a aircraft carrier (making it look like he actually served in war) to declare that our mission was accomplished, only to have 10 more years of our troops dying over his lie. You criticize Obama for not ending his normal life to mourn a man killed as a direct result of the former president careless actions in the Middle East. You seem to have a real selective morality.

To the right wing hypocrites with short memories Mr. Bush started the war in Iraq and spent twice as many vacation days.

The world is messed up and I don't think one man can fix it. Lately I've been reading comments and all I see is the hate. Maybe that's part of the problem. We can hide and voice out our opinions and do nothing about them. I'm tired of the hate. We need to change this direction or we will all be doomed.

So glad the President and his family had a well-deserved break, and that they chose our tiny speck
Of the world to come to.
His accomplishments in office are significant, their family's closeness inspiring, and we have all benefited
From nearly 8 years of respect in the world.
Thank you for coming, hope you had fun, and wish you all the best in the last part of your term.
Surely you will pull one more rabbit out of your hat.
Most gratefully, and proudly,
A mother, a teacher and a loyal democrat,
Ruth Campbell
