Two boats built at the Gannon and Benjamin shipyard in Vineyard Haven won top honors and special recognition in the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta held over the weekend.

Owned by Robert Soros and skippered by Scott DiBiaso of West Tisbury, the wooden schooner Juno placed first in its class in four races that concluded Monday. Nat Benjamin was on board Juno along with his skipper and crew.

Ross Gannon and his family also raced in their 45-foot double head sail sloop Eleda which placed first in its class as well as being singled out as the recipient of the Arne Frisell Prize for greatest attention to structural integrity and safety.

Ross Gannon’s son Lyle Zell was also part of the crew aboard Juno.

The Gannon and Benjamin shipyard is known for its wooden boat craftsmanship.

The 27th annual classic yachts regatta was sponsored by Panerai and marked by strong trade winds and high seas. “Classic sailors came ashore soaking wet, covered in salt and wide-eyed from the thrill of it all,” reported one account on the website Sail World. “The heavy weather showed the Classic Yachts in their element. There is no more impressive a sight, to sailing enthusiasts, than beautifully maintained elegant yachts crashing through Caribbean surf.”
