The Gay Head Lighthouse Committee wants you to join in to help save the lighthouse and the committee is getting creative. Or rather, the time is for you to get creative and be a part of the lighthouse poetry project.

The idea is straightforward — write a poem about the Gay Head Lighthouse. Stroll your memories for moments spent with the lighthouse. Go back in time or stay with the precarious present moment when erosion threatens the future of the light.

All submissions will be displayed on the Save the Lighthouse website and Facebook page. Selected poems will be published in a limited edition, letter-press, hand-bound anthology and all sales from this book will benefit the Town of Aquinnah’s Gay Head Lighthouse Fund.

There is a limit of up to three poems per person of any style or length (prose poems accepted). The deadline is January 1, 2014. All winning submissions will be notified by email in February 2014.

Email submissions are preferred but hard copies may be sent to Town of Aquinnah Lighthouse Poetry Project, 65 State Rd., Aquinnah, MA 02535

I am so deeply sadden by the news of my beloved Gay Head Light. I remember the day while on vacation many years ago I had the opportunity to be a "Lighthouse Keeper" for a day. I stood my vigil upon its grounds to insure no one was climbing the beautiful cliffs nor entering the property. I was amazed how many tourists ignored the signs below that said, "Do not climb cliffs". This abuse plus erosion destroyed them. I would like to see the lighthouse & property given back to the Wampanoag Tribal Council whose many descendents even before 1870 looked after this beautiful lighthouse & property. Again, the government steps in to take away from the Indians(as they've done for years across the country)what is rightfully theirs!!!!
