A single-car crash along Edgartown-West Tisbury Road Wednesday morning left one woman injured and resulted in the temporary closure of a major portion of the roadway.
Kathryn Retmeir, 55, of West Tisbury was driving a 2007 Mercury Mountaineer toward West Tisbury when she hit a tree, Sgt. Jeffrey (Skipper) Manter 3rd said. The crash caused extensive front-end damage to the vehicle, he said.
Ms. Retmeir was traveling with a young child, Mr. Manter said. The child was safely secured in the back seat and was uninjured.
Police closed Edgartown-West Tisbury Road from the airport to State Road for about 30 minutes. The accident occurred just after 9 a.m.
Emergency responders originally called in Ms. Retmier’s injuries as a priority one, the most severe category of injury, but upgraded her condition to priority two at the scene, he said. She was transported by Tri-Town Ambulance Service to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.
Police from Chilmark and Edgartown assisted in closing the road while West Tisbury officers and emergency medical personnel treated the patient and removed the car from the scene of the accident.
Mr. Manter said the cause of the accident is unknown and under investigation.
The accident was the most serious in a spate of incidences that temporarily blocked access to Island roads.
On Wednesday evening a portion of Sea View avenue was closed to traffic when an SUV crashed into a utility pole near the sea wall. The driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries, said Oak Bluffs firefighter John O’Donnell. The road was closed to traffic in both directions while NStar crews worked to repair the damaged utility pole. The driver was not identified.
On Thursday afternoon Edgartown officers put up another temporary blockade on Edgartown-West Tisbury due to a single-car accident at the intersection of Hye Road that downed power lines.

There was a single car
michele jones oak bluffs, ma.There was a single car accident in OB at around 5 PM yesterday as well. How many single car accidents does that make this summer? Does anyone think that cell phone usage might have something to do with some of these accidents? At least the child was properly protected in this accident.
