The Martha’s Vineyard Commission will review new utility poles placed around the Island as a development of regional impact (DRI).

The regional authority voted 13-1 last Thursday that the project merited review by the commission, DRI director Paul Foley said. Edgartown commissioner James Joyce was the no vote.

The Tisbury board of selectmen referred the project to the commission, saying that the 180 larger utility poles that will be placed on public roadways — some replacing existing poles and some new — should be reviewed by the commission because they have a substantial regional impact.

The new utility poles are about 10 feet higher and six inches wider than the previous poles, Mr. Foley said last week.

The poles are being placed on Edgartown-Vineyard Haven road and Edgartown-West Tisbury road.

The land use planning committee discussed the project at their meeting last Monday and voted to recommend that the commission take the project under review. During the meeting, commissioners said it was unclear what authority they had over the project, but that there should be a discussion, and the commission should have more control over work by utility companies.

Everyone wants electricity, as long as it doesn't require generation by; coal, nuclear, gas, oil, or windmills. So that leaves solar? This isn't Arizona. It takes utility poles to carry the transmission wires for electricity, cable television and telephone. Underground placement of these wires would be ridiculous. Just like the self-important commissioners.

What is the point of going through this process now that the poles are up? Would you ask NStar to take them down? How about having gone through this process while they were lying on the ground, before they were erected. How about working on having the two failed underground cables repaired before a third one fails or brown outs destroy copious amounts of electrical equipment? Are these poles tall enough to discreetly attach cellular antennaes?

The poles are out of scale for the area and are an eye sore. The poles
should be shortened to the original height and Nstar should be scolded.

The gas pumps in the Edgartown harbor are not working, there is ONE pump!!!!,! Also the water station was out. Lets focus what drive business to the island in the summer. The road the poles are on are not scenic, and the wire have to be carried by something. We all want reliable electricity, I am going to visit Mr Israel when mine goes out

Lets focus on what is important, these concerns about visual issues are a day late and dollar short .

I am very unhappy with the appearence of the poles. Out of scale and out of place. Not to mention they chopped the tree's basically in 1/2 around them. I live at the begining of the Egartown Viveyard Haven Road where the project began. I was in shock when I came home from work to see what had been done. I hope I am not over looked in the review of the pole project. Its plain ugly. If the exsisting poles did the job for the last 75 year at the size they are why did we need this? Why was this not figured out before they went up? When you drive past Vineyard Haven Edgartown Road at the beginning of the project you really can see how out of scale they are. I hate seeing them every night I come home. I hope they are removed. Our electricity is reliable enough for me. Frankley I would like to see our Harbor front in Vineyard Haven restored. Lets fix the Poles project 1st.
