Ordnance Operation
An ordnance demolition operation is planned on Noman’s Land for Sept. 21 and 22. Originally scheduled for the end of August, the operation was postponed due to Hurricane Irene.
The objective of this operation is to detonate any explosive charges on recently discovered ordnance. Explosions may be heard when demolition operations are being performed. It will be carried out by the U.S. Navy, in coordination with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.
Dukes Academy Named
Top Real Estate School
Dukes Academy has been selected as one of the top three real estate schools in the commonwealth, according to Banker and Tradesmen, a leading real estate and banking journal.
Dukes Academy is the only real estate school on the Vineyard that provides state-mandated courses for continuing education for real estate license holders; the academy offers classes for both salesperson and broker licensure.
Grant for Artists
The Martha’s Vineyard Center for Visual Arts (MVCVA) has announced a new grant program for Island artists.
The new grants program was established with money from the sale of the Firehouse Gallery, which the MVCVA previously owned, to Alison Shaw and Sue Dawson.
The tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks occurs this Sunday and there will be a number of services of remembrance to mark the day. The American Legion along with the Tisbury Fire Department will be holding a ceremony at Five Corners marking the times each tower of the World Trade Center was hit.
Announcing Olivia
Kristy Maciel and Nicholas Weyl of West Tisbury announce the birth of a daughter, Olivia Jodi-May Weyl, born on Sept. 2, 2011, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Olivia weighed 5 pounds, 7.5 ounces at birth.
Class of 1961 Reunion
The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School’s Class of 1961 will gather for their 50th class reunion the weekend of Sept. 16 to 18.
The reunion committee has planned a three-day affair, beginning with a welcome back party Friday at Mary Ellen Smith Larsen’s home 6 to 9 p.m. There will be a dinner at Saltwater restaurant at 6 p.m. on Saturday, and a cookout at Richard Olsen’s at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Tickets are available for dinner and cost $85 per person.
