The Martha’s Vineyard Democrats are holding a meeting this Saturday, Jan. 14. from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Howes House in West Tisbury.
The guest speaker is Mary Jane Sorrentino, a sustainability consultant with Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project. Ms. Sorrentino will present a half-hour program on elements of the climate crisis. She is a graduate of Fordham University, holds a master’s from George Washington University and is currently a candidate for an MS degree from Antioch in Environmental Studies.
Inside Scoop on Occupy
Having trouble getting a handle on what to occupy these days? Well, on Sunday, Jan. 15, there will be an educational forum entitled, Understanding the Occupy Movement.
The forum takes place at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center, located at 130 Centre street in Vineyard Haven. The discussion is from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and will be followed by a community supper at 5 p.m.
Who will gather leaves for the children’s craft?
Who will sort the harmless reds from the poison?
Who will fold and unfold the octagonal star?
Who will care less for the flower than for its unfolding?
Who will look at a rock and see a king, a loser, a lost you?
Al Hurwitz Reception
Al Hurwitz is a world-renowned art educator. He has won numerous awards including a National Art Educator award, a Sir Herbert Read award from the International Society for Education through Art and, most recently, the Eisner Lifetime Achievement Award. He also holds the Chair Emeritus of the Center for Art Education at the Maryland Institute College of Art, and has written the classic art book, Children and Their Art: Methods for the Elementary School with Michael Daly.
Carly Simon, especially for those who live on or visit Martha’s Vineyard, is a bold-faced name. In fact, she has been famous for so long it is as if she were born famous; biding her time in the womb, say, by humming the first bars of Anticipation. Such is the price of fame, this distorted view by those on the outside looking in. We see only the finished product, the glamorous stage presence, so natural, again as if she had rocked her own delivery room with a chorus of You’re So Vain. But this is a false picture, one that does not include the shy stutterer who achieved her success the old-fashioned way, with a lot of very hard work.
January, a time of darkness and deep winter. Time to hibernate? Think again. It’s time to reenergize. At least that’s the feeling of the folks at the Martha’s Vineyard Women’s Network. But they also realize that energy is best harnessed in a group and led by a creative wonder.
