Dorianne Downe Guernsey, a beloved and longtime Katama resident known for her warmth, elegance and spirited charm, died on July 20 in Woodstock, Vt. She was 103.

Born in Bayonne, N.J. on Oct. 15, 1921, Dorianne was the daughter of industrialist George Downe and Vera Stans Downe. She spent her childhood between the East Coast and Vermont, where her family summered on Lake Champlain.

After attending college in New York, she joined the New York Tribune during World War II.

In the early 1940s, she met her future husband, Otis Guernsey Jr. — a playwright, author, and editor — through family friends. The couple married on Dec. 1, 1943, at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Manhattan.

Otis served as the drama critic for the New York Herald Tribune for 35 years, steadily reviewing as many as eight new plays a week produced in New York, Boston and Washington. The Guernseys shared a deep love of literature, theatre and entertaining, maintaining an active circle of friends across Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket and Vermont. They spent many happy summers at Kent Harbor in Edgartown, the family’s beloved gathering place for nine generations.

Known for her impeccable style, keen intellect and gracious spirit, Dorianne was a cherished figure in Woodstock’s social and cultural life. She was a devoted member of the Woodstock Garden Club, a passionate reader and a generous friend. Her home was always a welcoming place for lively conversation, laughter and good company.

Like her mother — who lived to 105 — Dorianne’s long life spanned more than a century of extraordinary experiences and enduring friendships. Even in her later years, she remained deeply engaged and curious, delighting in literature, history and the natural beauty of both the Vineyard and Vermont.

She is survived by her nephews Peter Tony Guernsey Jr., David Guernsey Jr. and Kent Guernsey; her nieces Dinah Reath, Didi Woodhull and Suzi Funnell; and her great-niece, Jackie Kleinhans.

She was predeceased by her husband, Otis Guernsey Jr., who died in 2001.

Dorianne Guernsey will be remembered as one of the past century’s true grande dames—a woman of enduring grace, humor and vitality. A celebration of her life took place this past August following her interment in the family plot at Tower Hill in Edgartown.
