Lagoon Pond in Tisbury has been closed to scalloping by order of the shellfish constable, Danielle Ewart.
In a letter to shellfishers dated Jan. 13, Ms. Ewart said the abundance of juvenile scallops in the pond led her to close the fishery as of 4 p.m. that day.
Before the season began in November, Ms. Ewart gave the select board advance notice that she would close the fishery if it appeared that juvenile scallops needed protection.
“So if there is ...a lot of seed bay scallops and people are dragging on them, we have the option to close the season early,” she said at the Oct. 28 select board meeting.
