Jupiter is Close

The brightest planet in our sky is now in opposition. Jupiter will be 393 million miles away, its closest to us, for the year. You'll see it rising in the eastern sky after sunset. It is brilliant, about as bright as it gets.

That is still pretty far. It takes light 35 minutes to get to us. Consider for comparison, at 93 million miles away, it takes light eight minutes to reach us from the sun,

Enoy the sight of the planet. Jupiter is in the zodiacal constellation Gemini. By midnight, the planet is almost overhead.

Jupiter is this month's easiest planet to see. Mars and Venus are positioned too close to the glare of the sun and thus not visible to us.

Saturn enters into the zodiacal constellation Pisces next week. You can find it early in the evening in the southwestern sky. It is the brightest celestial object in that area of the sky. However, Saturn is not as bright as Jupiter, thus it you've got to hunt for it.
