The Martha’s Vineyard chapter of the NAACP will hold its annual Martin Luther King Jr. luncheon at the Portuguese-American Club on Jan. 19.
The luncheon will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. and feature guest speaker Kyle R. Williams, a longtime educator and social justice advocate. Tickets are $75 and include a one-year NAACP membership.
Mr. Williams is the creator of “A Long Talk about the Uncomfortable Truth,” a 21-day anti-racism experience that has welcomed over 25,000 people to participate in conversations about race, history and accountability.
MV NAACP president Shawn Ramoutar said his talk will be enriching.
“He’s a very dynamic speaker,” Mr.Ramoutar said. “He’s going to speak about several subjects that are affecting the community as a whole and we’re looking forward to that.”
The luncheon will also feature African American cuisine cooked by Seasoned With Soul and live music from pianist Jeremy Berlin.
Each year the luncheon honors the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and is a time when members gather to unite under a shared vision of civil rights. Mr. Ramoutar said the Vineyard chapter is facing challenges and he hopes the new year will usher in more youth.
“We’re at a place right now in the branch where everyone is getting up there in age,” Mr. Ramoutar said. “We really need the young people to come out and get involved with the organization.”
Mr. Ramoutar, who is also the assistant to the town administrator in West Tisbury, was appointed president of the MV NAACP in October. He had been the head of the chapter’s communications committee and ran uncontested during a special election.
His appointment came during a time of flux for the organization, when former president Dhakir Warren resigned a few months into the role according to meeting minutes from March 22. The chapter’s vice president, Arielle Faria, also resigned.
Mr. Ramoutar said the chapter was in a state of limbo after the previous leadership stepped down, but the members persisted. Over the summer Mr. Ramoutar said the organization hosted a successful Taste of Juneteenth event and awarded scholarships to five graduating seniors at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School.
“We’re in a place where we’re reorganizing and we need volunteers, and so I’m trying my best to get the word out,” Mr. Ramoutar said.
He hopes the luncheon will be a moment when the community can come together and coalesce around shared democratic ideals.
“That’s the whole goal, to move forward together,” Mr. Ramoutar said.
