Harbor Homes will be opening warming centers this week in anticipation of freezing temperatures.
On Jan. 1, Grace Church in Vineyard Haven will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Jan.2, The Federated Church in Edgartown will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
According to Harbor Homes winter shelter director Lisa Belcastro, lunch will be served on both days.
“They’ll have hot beverages, water, milk and juice,” she added.
The warming centers will continue periodically throughout the winter when temperatures are particularly frigid, she said. Harbor Homes is unable to host a warming shelter 24/7 and they partner with various churches on Island and the Red House. A temporary warming center opened Dec. 26 at Grace Church.
“I’ll do my best to keep looking at the weather every day and planning ahead and then reaching out to collaborating partners,” Ms. Belcastro said.
Harbor Homes also operates an overnight winter shelter. The shelter opened on Nov. 1 and will continue through April 18 from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. with dinner and breakfast served. Guests must arrive between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. This year the shelter is located at 111 New York avenue in Oak Bluffs.
“It’s been good. It’s been busy,” she said. “The one plus is that because we have laundry and showers on property, we’re able to offer that every night, which is awesome.”
