Irish harpist and singer Áine Minogue returns to the Island with a concert on Saturday, Jan. 3 at the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury.
Ms. Minogue will perform haunting selections from Irish and Celtic winter traditions, with proceeds going to support the church’s work in the community, including its community meals program. The show begins at 1 p.m.
Ms. Minogue was born in Borrisokane, Ireland and grew up in a family of folk musicians. She followed in the footsteps of her two sisters and started playing the harp at age 12 while attending boarding school in Galway. She moved to the United States as an adult and settled in New England.
Her recordings include The Mysts of Time, Between the Worlds, Circle of the Sun, Celtic Meditation Music and Celtic Lamentations (2005 Celtic album of the Year and one of the Boston Globe’s 10 albums of 2006).
In her music, she seeks to preserve traditions that predate Ireland itself, and performs with a pre-1700 Celtic harp, one of just a few still in existence.
“It is a fabulous instrument,” Ms. Minogue said during an interview with the Gazette before a show in 2018 at the Edgartown Library. “Ireland has a lot of traditions, a lot of stories, and I want to share those with you today, through my harp.”
Tickets for Saturday’s concert are available online on a sliding scale basis. Visit fccowt.org.
