Oak Bluffs Town Column: Week Ending Nov. 7

The late Walter Lowe lived on Vineyard avenue and he would have marveled at all the young people enjoying Halloween with full-bloom costumes, walking, biking and running in the middle of the street last Friday.

The late Walter Lowe lived on Vineyard avenue and he would have marveled at all the young people enjoying Halloween with full-bloom costumes, walking, biking and running in the middle of the street last Friday. Thanks to the Oak Bluffs fire department, whose bright red trucks blocked of the street at Dukes County and Pacific to create a sanctuary for our little kids and big kids to be free spirits on a day that was balmy and sunny.

But there was more going on around the town. The Martha’s Vineyard Savings  Bank branches were fully decorated with angel hair, skeletons, pumpkins, haunted house furniture and more competing for the best dressed Halloween-themed locations. The Uncas avenue branch was clearly in the vote lead when I stopped by.

The Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School held their annual scarecrow fundraiser to raise funds for school trips, special projects such as arts and crafts, theatre and sports. What a fun and creative way to delight the imagination of the public and support some of our young people.

The Marine Biological Laboratory, the Falmouth Public Schools and the Martha’s Vineyard African American Heritage Trail will be honoring Dr. James G. Townsel as the first plaque dedication in Woods Hole. Dr. Townsel was an MBL scientist for over 50 years and was the founder of the Summer Program in Neuroscience, Excellence and Success. All are welcome to join this dedication on Nov. 18 at noon at the MBL in Woods Hole. Congrats to Elaine Weintraub and her team for their first plaque in Woods Hole! More recognitions are yet to come.

Paradise on earth is enjoying the Vineyard experience. Enjoy it as life is fleeting.

Rest in Peace, Randall Edward Taylor.
