Dust off the dancing shoes and baking skills, it’s time for the 31st annual Barnraisers Ball.
The event will be held Saturday, Nov. 8 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury. As per tradition, there will be a BYOB dessert potluck and music from Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish.
The Barnraisers Ball celebrates the anniversary of the raising of the Agricultural Hall in 1994. A dairy barn had been transported from New Hampshire, and hundreds of Islanders pitched in to help build the new community hub. Afterwards, there was a big party, and each year at the Barnraisers Ball, that community spirit is invoked.
“We embrace the tradition of the event and really celebrate those 300 folks that came and built the place 31 years ago,” said Agricultural Society president Lauren Lynch. “It’s one of those constants that people really appreciate.”
According Ms. Lynch, it’s the perfect time of year for such an event.
“At this time of the year where things have slowed down, there are not as many tourists and it’s when everybody is taking a collective breath and happy to see each other and not feel like they’re rushing here or there,” she said.
During the day, the third annual Barnraisers Day takes place from 1 to 2:30 p.m., where kids and adults can craft their own versions of the Agricultural Hall out of cardboard, Play-Doh, Legos and other supplies. People will be able to vote for their favorite at the ball, and the winner will receive a free 2026 Ag Society membership.
“It’s a fun crafting event where kids can connect and think about the building they’re in,” Ms. Lynch said.

That was 31 years ago? Wow,
francis x koch CHILMARKThat was 31 years ago? Wow, time has flown. The great weather that weekend of community shingling. And the mad panic to inlay and weld metal braces from post to post per the (Lenny ) building inspector's requirement.
