Our weather this week has not been as important as Jamaica and the storm they faced. Our thoughts are with all of our Jamaican community on the island, hoping that all is well with their family and friends who experienced Melissa.

Happy Birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Eloar De Souza, who celebrated Oct. 26; Thayer Kelly, Oct. 29; and to Akhalia Lewis and Scarlett La Bonte, who celebrated their day Oct. 30.

Halloween is always a fun day in October for people young and old to enjoy and dress up, some in scary costumes and some in funny ones. We are lucky to have towns that had three different days of trick or treating for everyone.

The costumes have come a long way since my day, and parents are so creative creating them. I am taking us all back to when you went to the store and there were boxes of costumes of your favorite cartoons, such as Mighty Mouse, Bugs Bunny, Howdy Doddy, Deputy Dawg. The costume fit over your clothes, and there was a plastic face mask with elastic to hold it on your face. Oh my, am I aging myself.

Our parents went to the candy aisle and bought bags of gum, lollipops, fireballs and that everlasting candy corn, to put in little bags that we had to fill before we went out so they would be ready for the trick or treaters coming to our house. Now there are little candy bars, smarties, lollipops and lot of other treats. And yes, there is still that candy corn.

Thank you to our towns for treating the trick or treaters and a big thank you to the families on William street in Vineyard Haven who open their homes on Halloween night and welcome all Island trick or treaters. The amount of people that show up there is amazing, and it is safe and the kids and families have a great time.
