Edgartown Town Column: Week Ending Oct. 24

We got some more rain, and the wind has kept us on our toes. I know that the wind surfers have been very happy as they zip along in Sengy Pond. Watching how far they can get lift off is quite entertaining.

The fall battle is on. With each rain and windstorm more and more leaves are coming off the trees, and we are trying to keep up with them so you can still see the lawn and driveways. I think we are being a bit cheated of the colors that the leaves turn, so I hope Mother Nature spares us some so we might see those beautiful colors the trees can give us.

At the nursery we are keeping up with the fall flowers and sending perennials back to the farm to cover up for the winter. We are getting some strange looks and being asked why we are putting up Christmas lights already. We have many lights to put up for the Evening of Enchantment in December and our saying “Don’t stand still or you will be wrapped in white lights” has come up again. With that being said, the weather is still decent and warm, so it is easier on your hands and easier to get a lot done before the cold weather. Plus, the earlier we start, the more spectacular it will be.

Halloween is upon us, and the Stop and Shop has more candy than we can all handle. The costumes are being created, and I can’t wait to see the Charter School creations that will soon be around town.

If you want to see all the Halloweeners, this Sunday the stores will be open for Trick or Treaters, and in years past it has been very busy. It is fun just to go into town and watch the fun.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
