Chilmark Town Column: Week Ending Oct. 17
They call it a silver jubilee. I think it has something to do with silver being a metaphor for the enduring and precious nature of the relationship.
They call it a silver jubilee. I think it has something to do with silver being a metaphor for the enduring and precious nature of the relationship. October 14, 2025, marks the date that Kendra Buresch and Chris Carroll celebrate this milestone. It is an accomplishment based on a journey of growth. It’s about becoming wiser with each day as they continue to grow into their roles as parents and partners. Cheers to love, laughter and whatever the next chapter brings.
As Chris and Kendra celebrate 25 yeas, Marshall and I acknowledge 30. Somehow, after 35 years of working side by side, we still manage to like each other, I think? We aren’t big bold celebrants and tend to fly under the radar on most things, but this year he chose to Card My Yard on the porch at the Texaco for all to see. I will admit, my first reaction was to cry because, if you know me, you know I am not a fan of surprises. However, the thoughtfulness of the gesture soon took over and made me smile.
A shout out to Hillary Noyes-Keene and John Keene who ventured off to the solitude of Tarpaulin Cove for their 29th anniversary. Out of curiosity, I looked up what the traditional gift is for this milestone. Apparently, it is furniture representing the comfort and stability that a couple has achieved. I like it.
Well wishes go out to Chris Fielder who managed to break her leg. I am sure we are all wishing her a speedy recovery and are looking forward to her being back out and about on both feet again. For some comedic relief, let me say, I know it’s going “tibia” okay.
While at the weigh-in the other night, Mary, Perry and Gabe Ambulos came strolling through to see the happenings. I miss the days of being greeted by Mary at the front door of the Chilmark School so it was, as always, a pleasure to see her in person along with her best guys. We reminisced a little bit and it came up that Gabe will be moving and living his best life in London. Across the pond is quite a distance and not one to just pop in for the weekend, but London is a fabulous place to visit and a surprisingly easy trip from Boston, so I am not worried that this clan will be able to keep in close touch. I am excited for your next step in the world, Gabe. Go you.
Mountain climbing is a thrilling and exhilarating outdoor activity. It offers people the opportunity to push physical and metal limits while being immersed in the beauty of nature. Trish Murphy, just before the day marked by celebrating 20 years of marriage with Lucas, achieved a goal. After reaching the summit of New Hampshire’s Cannon Mountain, she raised her arms in a glorious sense of accomplishment. It was her 48th and final New Hampshire 4000-plus footer. Welcome to the 4000 Footer Club.
The countdown is on to Halloween. The chatter about costumes is beginning as is the chatter about trick or treating. As per, I suppose you can call it usual, I’m taking names and locations of folks willing to accept fairies, ghouls, fishermen and more to pay a visit for some sweets. If you are interested in having you lights on, the universal sign for joining the fun, please give me a shout. If you are a little off the beaten path and worry the goblins won’t find you, have no fear, I have ideas.
Once again, the Chilmark Volunteer Firefighter’s Association members will have the doors open at the CCC on Oct. 31 from 5 to 5:45 p.m. for community kids to pop in for a slice of pizza, some cider, a goodie bag and an opportunity to strut their stuff before setting out into the darkness. All are welcome to stop in and see what creative costumes our kids have come up with this year.
