Vineyard Haven Town Column: Week Ending Oct. 10

“Last night I dreamed I went to Manderley again.”

“Last night I dreamed I went to Manderley again.”

I am so tired of reading about the demise of democracy I picked up one of my favorite books, Rebecca by Daphne Du Mauriur, and am peacefully rereading it.

How about our Patriots? It was a nailbiting game on Sunday!

Dale Ferry attended his 20th high school reunion here last month. He had a great time.

This Saturday, Oct. 11, is our annual LadyFest in Oak Bluffs. It is a fundraiser against domestic violence. It will be a bit different this year. Instead of closing off Circuit avenue, LadyFest will be held at Alley-Waban park. The headliner is the amazingly talented Esperanza Spalding. There will be foodtrucks, other bands and performers and much camaraderie.

The Barn, Bowl and Bistro hosts a fundraiser for our Tisbury Council on Aging from 5 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 16. Call 508-696-4205 for tickets.

If you are also tired of reading about the demise of our democracy join everyone at Five Corners on Oct. 18 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18 for another No Kings Day.

Our annual fishing derby ends on Oct. 16.

My dear cousin, Joanne Gardella, returned to Florence, Italy, yesterday. She lives there half the year and teaches English.

Ashley Medowski has new fall hours, on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit and see her latest creations.

There is extra urgency in our fundraising efforts for beloved radio station WMVY. Money for the arts is being cancelled all over the USA. Please help out.

My dear friend, Lindsey Gonsalves, claimed Sept. 5 on the birthday bandwagon; Carolyn O’Daly celebrated on Sept. 16; Linda Tydings Massaro partied on Sept. 27; Ednaldo Freire observed Sept. 28; Tristan Israel had Sept. 30; and Oct. 7 was shared by Albion Alley and Tammy Morrison Glenn. Many happy returns.
