Edgartown Town Column: Week Ending Oct. 10

If you drove past the beach last Saturday, it was filled with beach-goers. It was a very warm day and the beach was the place to be.

If you drove past the beach last Saturday, it was filled with beach-goers. It was a very warm day and the beach was the place to be. Sunday was the same kind of day, where you wondered if it really was October. But after watching the weather, reality is about to hit.

Happy Birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to all those school kids who celebrated their day.

Due to COVID and other different reasons, Sonny and Cindy Laurent have not been home to the Vineyard for six years. They were able to travel up from Louisiana this year to visit her family in Somerset and of course spent a few days here. It was a great visit, and Cindy had a list of things she wanted to see, people to visit and, of course, some good Island seafood. I traveled my yearly visit up-Island with them and we hit all the special places, along with eating lobster rolls from Stanley Larsen and watching the fishermen on the jetty’s. Then it was on to the Cliffs, and the long way back to Edgartown.

Sonny worked at Al’s package store for many years, and even after they left in 1997 people still came up to him and recognized him from Al’s. It was a much too short visit, but we packed in a lot of activity in a few days. Hopefully it won’t be another six years before we can visit again.

Debbie MacInnis traveled to Maine for two weeks to cat-sit for her brother and sister-in-law. On her trip up she got a bit lost, and her GPS failed her, and she said she would never again travel without her Rand McNally Atlas. But once there and settling in with Chunk the cat she was ready for her two-week stay. She got to visit with one of three cousins in the area who will soon be moving across country.

As in true Debbie style she read many books, and of course traveled to see the colors, but because it has been so dry without the rain the leaves are turning fast and dying before all the colors are out. But all in all, it was a good trip, and she is happy to be home with her own cat, Indy.

Have great week and keep the home candles burning.
