Chappy Town Columns: Week Ending Sept. 26

Keep an eye on those two potential hurricanes just off of the doorstep of Cape Hatteras. These are the ones that don’t give a whole lot of warning because they wait until they are nearly upon us before getting named. I check in with Mike’s Weather Page. It shows all of the latest information from the National Hurricane Center. Fingers crossed that they only come close enough to give us a good soaking.
A couple of weekends back, the first day of the derby coincided with the wedding of a young lady from Chappaquiddick. The bride asked if she could have the ferry decorated with garlands. Of course, we obliged. When she and her entourage came across, her photographer had a nicer background than the plain old bare railings of the ferry. Shortly thereafter, a caravan of fishermen got out of their fully equipped beach buggies and posed in front of the decorations. One of them commented, “Wow, You guys are really going all out for the start of the derby. Thanks!”
The Chappy Ferry certainly enjoys the presence of the influx of eager anglers headed for the beaches of Chappy. There has been a big gray seal lolling around in the harbor. She seems to be having a banquet on the same fish that are being pursued by the derby pin holders. I jokingly mentioned to some fisherfolks that I saw her surface with what looked like the first prize winning albie in her teeth. The response was that’s one of those good news/bad news situations.
Chappaquiddickers are already well represented on the derby leader board. Melissa Sliwkowski got a blue from shore and Kevin Peters got one from a boat. I personally think that fishing from a boat is kind of cheating since you get to sit down to fish.
