The 23rd annual NAACP George V. Tankard Jr. memorial 5K road race and walk takes place Saturday, Sept. 20 with a rain date scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 21.

The day kicks off at 9 a.m. with a 1-mile Fun Run for kids 12 and under, starting from the Summercamp Hotel, just across from the Oak Bluffs harbor.

At 9:30 a.m., the main event begins in Ocean Park.

In-person registration will be available at Summercamp on Friday, Sept. 19, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., and again on race morning from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Entry fees are $10 for the Fun Run and $20 for the 5K if registered in advance ($25 on race day). All 5K participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt and race number.

Thanks to the generosity of HOKA and The Green Room, everyone who registers for the 5K run/walk is automatically entered into a drawing to win one of six gift certificates for a pair of HOKA sneakers. Winners will be selected at random from registered bib numbers and prizes will be redeemable at The Green Room in Vineyard Haven.

The road race supports the Martha’s Vineyard chapter of the NAACP, founded in 1963. Proceeds go to the MVNAACP scholarship fund, awarded to Martha’s Vineyard high school seniors who embody the spirit of civil rights, leadership and good citizenship.
