Seeing earth shine on the setting crescent moon is is especially tough.
Seeing earth shine on the setting crescent moon is especially tough. You only get a brief chance the day or so after a New Moon. We think the best time to look will be this Sunday night. The moon will be a bright sliver of light, close to the horizon.
New Moon is tomorrow, it is a moment when the moon is between us and the sun and not visible. By Sunday evening, the dark side of the moon, mostly featureless, could shine too from the brilliance of our Earth.
The chances are slim, but worth checking out. Even if you can't see the earth shine, you'll get a nice view of the moon sinking into the western sky. Try looking another time, the night after a New Moon. If you see it, you've just collected a nice memory.

I saw it briefly at about 5
Gene Beauchamp OttawaI saw it briefly at about 5 AM, 8-21-25 (zip 66067), I was spellbound. It was bright, beautiful and big, I couldn't even pull myself away to go get my camera phone for a pic. Needless to say, it appeared in a moment, and was gone, in a moment. Forever is a beautiful memory.
