Illumination Postponed Due to Weather

The annual Oak Bluffs tradition will now be held on Thursday, and traditional candles will not be allowed.

Grand Illumination in Oak Bluffs has been postponed to Thursday due to inclement weather from Hurricane Erin.

The Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association announced the schedule change ahead of the annual tradition on Wednesday. Kim Rielly, the general manager of the Camp Ground, said that the traditional candles used for the event will not be allowed due to the expected high winds.

The Grand Illumination is attended by hundreds of residents and visitors every year. Cottagers decorate their homes with Chinese- and Japanese-style lanterns as attendees break out in song.

The hurricane is expected to go past the Vineyard while headed north east out to sea, resulting in strong winds and high surf through Friday.

This much needed rain and cold front is also pushing Erin out to sea. Thank you rain and wind!
