In 2017, five Oak Bluffs police families each welcomed a new baby, within the span of five months. Photographer Maria Thibodeau captured the moment by taking a photo of the babies and their policemen fathers, which appeared in the Vineyard Gazette under the headline: Five Officers, Five Babies, No Relief in Keeping the Peace.
Since then Ms. Thibodeau has continued to photograph the group, with each officer and his child seated in the same position from left to right: Seth Harlow and Gunner, James Hagerty and William, Dustin Shaw and Lowen, Jeff LaBell and Lark, Tim Millerick and Julian.
This year’s photo, juxtaposed with the first year, reveals a leap in time. The children are all eight years old now, baby bonnets and bows replaced by sneakers, T-shirts, dresses and sweaters. The men have changed too, some shifting careers and and perhaps adding some gray hairs.
But the smiles remain, big and bright and full of life. Happy Birthday season to all.
