Public health officials on the Island this week say they have found the season’s first mosquito with West Nile Virus.
A mosquito trapped in the area of Veteran’s Memorial Park on August 5 tested positive for the virus, which is the main cause of the mosquito-borne disease across the country.
Drew Belsky, the Tisbury health agent, said that the finding is not cause for alarm.
“We’re still at low risk in the town of Tisbury. The whole Island is considered low risk,” he said.
Mosquitos are tested from across the Island every week, according to Mr. Belsky. This is the first positve in Tisbury in at least two years.
In Edgartown, two mosquitoes tested positive in the Edgartown cemetery last year.
Mr. Belsky said that it serves a reminder to take precaution against mosquito bites. Preventative measures include dumping standing water, where mosquitoes lay their eggs, and using bug sprays when going into wooded areas.
“It’s important to reiterate that it is low risk. This is one sample out of dozens collected this year.” Mr. Belsky. “We’ll continue to monitor and keep track.”
