For the second year in a row, Emmy-award winning comedian and late-night talk show host Seth Meyers will perform a comedy show to help raise money for the new Chilmark Preschool.
The show will be held on August 18 at the Performing Arts Center, beginning at 7:30 p.m. All proceeds go towards the preschool fundraising campaign.
Mr. Meyers has been a seasonal resident of Chilmark since 2008, and for several years has also hosted the Possible Dreams fundraiser for Martha’s Vineyard Community Services.
Mr. Meyers is a father of three children and said the fundraiser is an important one for him.
“It’s a fun event and we’re so lucky to be part of the community of Martha’s Vineyard, to have children who get to spend their summer here,” Mr. Meyers said. “It just feels like a nice night to share with everybody.”
The new preschool project recently began construction and is planned to open for the 2026-2027 school year. According to Rebekah Thomson, president of the Chilmark Preschool board of directors, the $4.6 million goal is within reach.
“Our capital campaign is in a really exciting stage,” she said. “We’ve raised over $3.1 million and we’re in the homestretch. This event will really help close that gap.”
Ms. Thomson said she is grateful that Mr. Meyers offered to do another show to benefit the preschool, and to Associated Roofing for sponsoring the event again.
“He’s just exceptionally generous with his time,” she said. “He’s a father of three, so I’m sure the value of preschool education isn’t lost on them.”
Mr. Meyers said he likes to cater his material to things Islanders can relate to.
“It’s always nice to sort of open [with] 10 to 15 minutes that you could only do in the Vineyard,” he said. “It’s deeply rewarding to me when I can point out something that’s funny to everybody on the Island.”
Audiences can expect some shout-outs to people in attendance.
“My in-laws are going to come and the gloves are off,” Mr. Meyers said. “Every year I like to come at them really hard, and I don’t want them to think that this year is going to be any exception.”
Though Mr. Meyers performs for national audiences on a daily basis, he said shows where he can connect with his audience intimately are special.
“Anytime you drill down and find the common areas you share with people in the room, it’s a lot more fun,” he said. “I think that we can all agree that [the Vineyard] is a really special community and there’s also many things about it that we can all laugh about.”
He is also grateful for being able to give back to the community and the new preschool.
“It’s just so nice to see as that number gets closer to what they’re trying to hit, and to have played a small role in it is a good feeling,” he said.
