Jewish Cultural Festival Returns

The Jewish Culture Festival is returning to the Island on Tuesday, August 5.

The Jewish Culture Festival is returning to the Island on Tuesday, August 5.

Rabbi Tzvi Alperowitz, the co-director of Chabad on the Vineyard, said that he is looking forward to enriching the Jewish experience on the Island.

“We’re very much looking forward to it. It’s going to be a daylong celebration of Jewish culture. Everyone in the Vineyard community is welcome,” he said.

The event will be headlined by comedian and podcaster Elon Gold. After his set, there will be a live taping of his show, Stars of David with Elon Gold, where he will talk about Jewish humor throughout history.

In addition to comedy, there will be music by violinist Yaeko Elmaleh, who will play a selection of klezmer, Sephardic music and Israeli folk alongside a string quartet. Distant Cousins, an indie pop band from Los Angeles, will also perform.

There will also be communal murals to work on and a chance to decorate mezuzahs. A scribe will be in attendance to showcase the traditional art of Hebrew lettering.

“There will be two, very large community murals where the community can paint this mural.... We are very much looking forward to that, and, in general, the atmosphere of the community coming together to celebrate Jewish culture,” Rabbi Alperowitz said.

The festival will highlight food culture through the lens of different Jewish holidays, such as honey-glazed root vegetables for Rosh Hashanah and savory riffs on hamantaschen for Purim.

Rabbi Alperowitz said that bringing together people with a variety of interests helps create a stronger sense of community.

“It touches so many people....That’s what makes community, people coming together for different interests and reasons. That’s been very touching to see,” he said.

The festival takes place August 5 from 4 to 8 p.m. at a private residence in West Tisbury. The address will be given to guests after they RSVP. For more information and tickets, visit vineyardchabad.org.
