Edgartown Town Column: Week Ending August 1

Warm days and cool nights, what a great combination. The wind has been a little strong here and there, but it is a great cooling factor during the day.

Happy Birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. I am having problems with my school list, but I send big balloons and hope you all have special days.

August is here. Some say that summer is just about over as the kids from the southern states will start school in about two weeks and college students will be packing to leave. Then there are those that are just getting started on their vacation. We are also preparing for the much-anticipated events we have in August: Illumination, the Fair and, of course, the fireworks. So, hopefully you all enjoy the month of August.

My friend Grace and I always go for a lobster roll at least once a summer. We ended up venturing into town and thought if we got a parking space we would go to the Seafood Shanty. I think driving through town is the biggest adventure as you are stopping for cars to park, people crossing the street at any point and then pausing before they get on the sidewalk to see which way they need to go.

We were lucky and got a parking space as we pulled into the parking lot and right across from the Shanty. We joked as many do that our yacht had come in and was waiting for us as we admired the one at the dock. There was a big line waiting to go into the restaurant, but we made our way to the bar and found several seats and ordered our lobster roll and oysters. We got to people watch and visit and then headed home.

With a new month starting I would like to take some time to mention some important people who sometimes go unnoticed or are just taken for granted. Our police departments, firemen and EMS personal have all been very busy this summer. We hear sirens and know that something is happening, but we can’t forget that something is happening to someone, someone with a family, someone who is on vacation and in a strange place. Our safety officials are trained to take care of all situations, but we sometimes forget that they have feelings and are affected by these emergencies. They have had a few emergencies that did not turn out the way they would want and yet must get up and do it all over again the next day. So, thank you for all for what you do to keep us all safe and healthy.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
