Edgartown Town Column: Week of July 25
As I sit on the deck while writing this column, I am considering putting on a long sleeve shirt.
As I sit on the deck while writing this column, I am considering putting on a long sleeve shirt. It is such a relief from the humidity and heat we have been having. We had some rain but just a tease to the ground and plants. But for a few hours I will enjoy this cool weather.
Happy Birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. My list is not in order so again I hope you all enjoyed your day.
For the first time in many years, I took a summer vacation. I joined my family and traveled to Conway, N.H. and stayed in a house fitted for six adults and six children. We spent the first day getting settled and shopping in town, then the rest of the week we enjoyed Storyland, Echo Lake, Santa’s Village, Clarks Bear Farm and plenty of other activities. It was a great time with the hot tub, roasting marshmallows and a talent show put on by all the kids that they practiced for the whole week. We enjoyed our time together and are planning for next year’s adventure which is probably going to be in Washington DC.
Pat Tyra tells me that 20 years after her mother, Helen Shurtleff Tyra, died she discovered her handmade double bed quilt of really small colorful pieces with dozens and dozens of unique embroidery stitches around and often in each piece of the quilt. Pat never knew her mother was interested or knew how to do this kind of work. She had always made braided rugs (Pat has several now). If you see Pat around town she has a picture of the quilt with her, but the quilt was been donated to the Community Services Possible Dream auction, which was on Sunday, July 20. I don’t know how much it sold for but something like this is invaluable.
I don’t know if there are many sky watchers out there, but starting July 29, two meteor showers will begin. Delta Aquarids and Alph Capricornids will be peaking after midnight and peaking around 2 to 4 a.m. When our cousins Sonny and Cindy Laurent lived next door and there were less lights around the house we would wrap up and sit in the backyard and count them. When the meteors were not as plentiful, we would try and find satellites going over head. We would laugh when we discovered some of them were jets flying over and it was as great competition. The meteor showers also appear in the middle of August. We just have to hope for good weather and no fog.
Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
