Edgartown Town Column: Week Ending July 4

We had a few days of relief now back into the heat and humidity, and as I write this the Fourth of July looks like it is going to be a beautiful day.

We had a few days of relief now back into the heat and humidity, and as I write this the Fourth of July looks like it is going to be a beautiful day.

Happy Birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Sierra Meuse, who celebrated June 29, and to Carter Braillard, Savannah Wilson on June 30. This is where my list ends until July 13.So happy birthday to those between now and then. Enjoy your beginning of summer.

This past weekend was change-over weekend and all our July friends are coming. Yes, there is an increase in traffic, town is in full gear for the holiday, the stores are all opening up, the restaurants are full, ice cream stores are in full gear, and the Stop & Shop is a challenge.

The nursery has been busy with landscapers finishing up their properties, homeowners are in getting their gardens ready and it has been a big year for vegetables and herbs. With the intense heat last week, a lot of plants did not make it and now they are being replaced.

Join Vineyard Conservation Society and Friends of Sengekontacket for their post-Fourth beach cleanup — it’s a great way to give back after the holiday. The date is Saturday, July 5 (rain date is Sunday July 6) and is from 8 to 10 a.m. at your choice of three State Beach locations: next to the Oak Bluffs Steamship Authority, Little Bridge or Bend-in-the-Road beach.

Bags and gloves will be provide — just bring your energy and a friend or two. After the cleanup, stay for the trash tally and help them sort what you find. It’s a fun and eye-opening way to better understand the waste stream and how we can all reduce our impact.

Here is something to think about — I was going through social media and was informed we are six months away from Christmas. I don’t know the thought of it makes me feel cooler.

I hope you all have a safe and Happy Fourth of July.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
