Keep Cool

I could never live in Florida or Arizona. I prefer cold weather any day. A person can always put on an extra layer of clothing or toss another log in the fire.

I could never live in Florida or Arizona. I prefer cold weather any day. A person can always put on an extra layer of clothing or toss another log in the fire. This week’s sudden heat was unwelcome. I felt like I was walking around in molasses.

Nevertheless, the plants seem to love it — that is the ones who get adequate water. It’s remarkable how dry everything is after what seemed like enough spring rain. What’s even more remarkable is the amount of sprinklers I seem to possess. Do I simply purchase them willy-nilly before checking my existing hoard?

To you people with soaker hoses installed by a company, I am offering a word of caution. They use an inordinate amount of the metal weed mat staples to hold the hoses in place. Often they are every foot or so, as if the hoses are longing to escape. The staples promptly rust and, God forbid, if knelt upon could send a person to the ER for a tetanus shot. Obviously, I devoted too much time to my latest pet peeve. Sorry!

I finally put the squashes, pumpkins and watermelons into the ground. I put them into the hay mulch around the garlic. Hopefully, they will have room after the garlic harvest. I wondered if the smell of garlic might deter the hideous squash borer. As if! This is a particularly lethal pest. It bores into the stem so the plant peels right off at ground level. Hubbard squashes seem especially vulnerable.

While watering in the vegetable garden, I noticed a good number of honeybees at the ground. They seemed to be sucking up moisture from the wet soil.

There are certain weeds that I leave year after year — Fleabane is one. The small daisy-like blooms are everywhere right now.

I like to start perennials from seed. Last year, I tried Verbascum. The variety was Wedding Candles. It is great this season — tall, similar in appearance to foxglove. I do not see it in the local nurseries. I also seeded a mixed package of different colored yarrows. I wish I had seeded them in a meadow situation rather than in a perennial bed.

It’s fun to see all the Jaws celebrations. Those of us on the Vineyard in 1975 got a kick out of observing all the hoopla of Hollywood coming to town. Who knew it was going to be such a big deal?

Even before his descent on the golden escalator, DJT was obsessed with Barack Obama. He could not stand that he was the president, never mind a popular one. One of his first acts as president was to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement. That put the United States with Iran, Libya and Yemen as countries outside the world-wide agreement. Then, he spent a good deal of his first term trying to undo the Affordable Care Act. Thanks to John McCain, he failed.

Then, given the present situation with Iran, it’s rich that he tore up Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran. Too bad, as it was actually working. How sad that a person is so insecure emotionally that he can only disparage another person’s accomplishments, but here we are!
