Flight from Martha's Vineyard Crashes on New York Island

A New England Airlines plane flying from Martha’s Vineyard to Montauk, N.Y. crashed prior to its destination Friday.

A New England Airlines plane flying from Martha’s Vineyard to Montauk, N.Y. crashed prior to its destination Friday.

No one was injured when the Rhode Island-based plane started having engine troubles around 6 p.m., forcing the pilot to attempt an emergency landing at the Elizabeth Field airport on Fishers Island, according to New York state police and the Federal Aviation Administration.

The pilot crashed the Piper single-engine plane just prior to the runway at the island airport.

A pilot and two passengers were aboard.

The flight left Martha’s Vineyard Airport shortly after 5 p.m. on Friday, according to flight trackers.

The plane is registered to New England Airlines, which provides daily service to Block Island from Westerly, R.I. The company also provides charter flights across the country.

The FAA is investigating the crash.
