The Oak Bluffs select board voted Tuesday to issue a request for proposals for the project, which will put a roundabout at the chaotic intersection on the waterfront. Depending on the bids, construction could start in the fall.
The project will revamp the area where the Island Queen and Patriot ferries come in by adding the roundabout, creating a larger pedestrian area and reconfiguring the parking spaces. It will also add designated area for taxis and rideshare vehicles for easy pick-ups and drop-offs.
Select board member Gail Barmakian had concerns about the project’s start date, worried that it could disrupt the town’s peak visitor season.
Town administrator Deborah Potter assured the board that construction likely wouldn’t start before the late fall.
The project drew praise when it went through the Martha’s Vineyard Commission, with commissioners saying it could bring some measure of order to a long-disorganized part of town. Some criticized the redesign because it will result in the loss of some parking.
Copies of the project design are on display at Oak Bluffs town hall and on the town’s website.
The board also voted Tuesday to create a committee to look at the town’s alcohol policies, including the question of when the last call should be. The committee is expected to have town officials, police officers and bar and restaurant owners.
The board also gave Ms. Potter her annual town administrator review. All members gave her high marks, saying she's met or exceeded their expectations.

Bob EdgartownWhere is the money coming from to pay for this project? Is this another project being done Because we’re getting so-called free money from the state? And is it true There is no covered places to sit out of the rain or the sun in this project? Seems to me that what was there was not really broken and do not understand why we need to spend money to fix something that really did not need fixing.
Why not put in a Dunkin
Martha MageeWhy not put in a Dunkin Donuts and a CVS while you're at it? Maybe a Job Lots or a Dollar Tree Store and municipal landscaping and harsh glaring lighting as well just to make sure you completely ruin the character of the waterfront? Why not make the whole island look and feel exactly like the mainland?
