The weekend's cold has caused mechanical problems in three ferries.
Ferries to and from the Vineyard were temporarily halted Sunday morning after the weekend’s frigid temperatures are believed to have caused three ferries to break down.
Water pipes burst overnight on the Steamship Authority ferries Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, according to an announcement from the ferry line.
The two ferries were scheduled to sail the Vineyard route throughout Sunday. After missing several trips, they were back in service for their 10:45 a.m. departures. Portable toilets were put on the freight deck of the Martha's Vineyard for passengers.
The Katama ferry was also supposed to travel to and from Woods Hole but had a leak in a hydraulic line. That issue is also suspected to be due to the cold weather. The authority said later Sunday morning that repairs to the Katama were awaiting Coast Guard inspection.
With the three ferries sidelined for repairs, service to and from the Island was temporarily suspended. The Steamship Authority’s Gay Head ferry was pulled from Hyannis Sunday morning to help with the Vineyard trips.

Dave South shore-MassI drove onto the MV ferry 2/4 and they were dealing with the effects of the cold weather. The steamship authority handled things very professionally and handled thing in the best manner possible. I am grateful for the people in this organization and will continue to visit the island for work.
