Covid-19 cases on the Vineyard spiked sharply upward last week, with Island boards of health reporting 76 confirmed cases over a seven-day period from Nov. 28 through Dec. 4.
In daily reports issued for Sunday and Monday this week, another 19 cases were reported, for a nine-day total of 95 cases.
Arriving two weeks after the Thanksgiving holiday and just as Christmas holiday events get under way, the fresh case spike mirrors a trend seen around the commonwealth as public health leaders work to contain the spread of the virus, while strongly urging people who have not yet been vaccinated to do so.
Booster shots for those already vaccinated are also being recommended for all age groups. Vaccines are being scheduled at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital by appointment.
A mobile vaccination bus is scheduled to be on the Island on Saturday, Dec. 11, and Sunday, Dec. 12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School.
Online registration is required.
Information on cases to date from the six boards of health shows the contagious Delta variant is making its presence known on the Island. Of nine samples tested, six tested positive for the Delta variant.
Among the positive case count last week, 66 cases were tested at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, seven at Test MV and three tested in other locations, according to the weekly report put out Monday by the six boards of health.
A recent case cluster on an unspecified Island construction site included six cases, according to the report.
No one is currently hospitalized with the virus, according to the hospital website.
More information is expected by mid-week; the hospital is scheduled to hold a Wednesday morning briefing to update Island media about the rising case situation.
