My family and I returned to our homes in Michigan after our 36th year vacationing on Martha’s Vineyard. Over the years we have witnessed a shocking increase in the amount of trash left on the beaches and in public areas. This year our collection of beach trash included broken glass, beer bottle caps, plastic and paper wrappers, cups, cigarette butts and various beverage cans. Fortunately no soiled diapers, as was the case last year. Additionally while in Oak Bluffs Post Office Square, we observed napkins, sales receipts, beverage cups and lids, masks, empty juice bottles and energy drink cans littered about. Two peopled strolled through smoking in spite of clearly posted no smoking signs.
I just don’t get it. Quite frankly we are tired of picking up others’ trash. Why is it so difficult to follow the rules? We believe it is a privilege to vacation on the Island and plan to continue doing so. Apparently some people do not see it that way. There is tremendous angst and action over global warming, plastic in the oceans, carbon footprints, large SUVs, etc. but that same energy doesn’t appear to flow over into something which should be easy to control. Put your trash in the proper container. It should be as simple as that.

Thank you for not giving up
BarbThank you for not giving up on your fellow humans, I sympathize with your frustration, Yes, litter is everywhere this summer. It is a twofold issue of some people not caring, and a dearth of garbage receptacles. I also pick up garbage on my walks—usual (though not only) suspects being plastic water bottles, aluminum cans, and cigarette butts. Two of those items can be recycled, but in OB, for example, the options are few and far between. Town employees do the yeoman’s work of cleaning the parks every morning, and they deserve a hearty thank you for that. Tackling the issue of litterbugs is thornier. Confrontation can beget all sorts of unwelcome vitriol, and in the Covid era, I do not think it is worth the risk. But, I am hopeful that perhaps visitors who see other visitors cleaning up messes that don’t belong to them will be encouraged to rethink their behavior.
Fully agree…frustrating to
Bridget IslanderFully agree…frustrating to see such trash carelessly being discarded everywhere. Used masks, nips, beer cans, wrappers, etc., it’s disgusting. Not to mention, people letting their dogs poop on sidewalks and in peoples lawns without bothering to pick it up. I’ve even seen discarded poop bags in the woods and on the side of the street. So disrespectful to our beautiful community/ environment.
