Welcome Aboard

Welcome aboard we said when the mainlanders came offering big bucks for our family land, old houses, barns.

Welcome aboard we said when the mainlanders came offering big bucks for our family land, old houses, barns.

Welcome aboard we said when those folks needed year-round services of electricians, plumbers, landscapers and carpenters.

Welcome aboard we said when these folks offered to underwrite our many charities and year round institutions.

Welcome aboard we said when these folks needed caterers, restaurants, wedding planners, gourmet foods and lots of transportation.

Is it a surprise to learn that they are mortal too? That they are subject to all the same fears, germs, viruses and self survival instincts that we have?

I am as guilty as the next so offer no judgments, just suggest that we all exercise a saying I have heard used before on this Island: Think About It.

Years ago Foster Silva used to say to me and my brother, "don't come here to make a living; this is a place to come to vacation". As they say on The Street, "Sooner or later everybody is right".

Truly. And since we've worked so hard at selling the Vineyard as this halcyon, carefree vacation destination, even though we year-rounders know better, should we be surprised that people run here when they're afraid and looking for a safe harbor?
