Tuesdays in the Newsroom, the Gazette’s off-season speaker/discussion series, returns this month with a look back at Vineyard novelist Philip R. Craig, whose popular Island-based mystery series is being adapted for TV by the Hallmark channel.

Mr. Craig’s son, Edgartown Police Sergeant Jamie Craig, will be the featured speaker Jan. 21 to talk about his father and his prolific work, the first installment of the Hallmark mystery series and his own colorful career. A Beautiful Day to Die, the first of Philip Craig’s 17 books featuring ex-cop J.W. Jackson, is also the first to be adapted for the screen and will air Sunday, Jan. 12 at 8 p.m.

Sergeant Craig, who has served as an advisor on the series, is a frequent speaker on graver topics. A former Navy helicopter pilot and 26-year veteran of the Edgartown police force, he is also the commander of the Island’s SWAT team and conducts training for Island organizations on how to respond in active shooter situations.

Tuesdays in the Newsroom is held monthly from September to May for readers who want more engagement with the news. Admission is free for subscribers to the Gazette; non-subscribers pay $10. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. for refreshments, followed by the program at 5:30 p.m. Advance registration is required.
