At Rest or Play, Always a Loyal Companion

Annie, an Irish terrier who was well known and well loved by many on the Island, died on Veterans Day at Seven Gates Farm in West Tisbury where she lived with her owner. She was 12.

Born on July 22, 2007, at Galeway, the Norton kennel owned by champion Irish terrier breeders and handlers Gale and Bruce Cummings, Annie came to the Vineyard at age five months with her owner Julia Wells. She was a fine example of the breed: slender with racy lines, a wiry red coat and a small white star on her chest. She was agile, whip smart and plucky and took easily to training, always happiest when she had a job to do. She also was fiercely loyal, devoted to her family and gentle with children.

Annie quickly became the office dog at the Gazette, where she went to work every day with her owner, helping to preside over editorial matters from the couch in the editor’s office. She especially loved going for long walks, both at home in West Tisbury and in Edgartown, ever on the lookout for squirrels and rabbits.

In addition to her extended human family, she is survived by her siblings O’Malley and Fiddle, who joined the family in 2018.

She will be missed and long remembered by all who knew her.

There is no finer Irish terrier than Annie. Beautiful in personality and disposition, Annie was a beloved companion to her owner and her siblings. Her lively gait, twinkling eyes, steadfast loyalty, and humanlike perception were all part of her greatness. Annie was a special companion. Such loving memories we have of dear Annie in our hearts forever!!!
