Post Office Blues

On Saturday Sept. 7, I went to the Edgartown Post Office as I do almost daily.

On Saturday Sept. 7, I went to the Edgartown Post Office as I do almost daily. Inside my box was a yellow slip indicating I had a package or mail that needed to be picked up at the window. When the clerk returned, she was carrying a four-inch-long two-day priority mail package, three other packages and an oversized envelope that I recognized as a wedding invitation. I was surprised to see so many packages all at once, and was even more surprised to see they were all dated July 13-July 15 of this year! Almost two months after they were mailed.

I called for the post master to get an explanation for this, and he eventually (they asked him three times to come see me) opened his door and met me at the window. He told me his name was Tom Rome.

He said, “I don’t know what happened or why you’re getting all these today,” and shrugged his shoulders. I responded: “It’s your business to know what happened and why all these packages were sitting her for two months . . . you’re in charge!” He said, “If you have any complaints you can send a letter,” and he started to turn back to his office. I said in a loud voice (with several customers clapping and cheering me on): “Your incompetency is well documented by others and I’m just the most recent. You have no idea what goes under your command and shouldn’t be here.”

As I made it to my car with all these packages, the man who had been standing behind me exited and said: “For the second week in a row, they told me they haven’t received my prescriptions which are supposed to arrive each week.” I asked him to go back in and complain too, but he just shrugged his shoulders and said: “It won’t do any good. I’ve tried before.”

The next day, Sept. 8, I filed a formal complaint with the USPS.

I had a similar experience this August. I was picking up a package for my niece that was sitting there for a week. First he said it wasn’t there, then he refused to give it to me.
Met a customer outside who said to go back after he leaves for the day. Went back an hour later, after he left and got my package.
He should never be in charge of any office!
What a way to run a business!

Katie Rogan: Yu'll be happy to know I've already received a phone call from Tom Rome's boss, who received my complaint from the central D.C. Post Office. Stay tuned!
Anyone else??

The letter should have read a 4' long two-day Priority Mail package (4 feet, not inches). The four smaller packages, maybe, but a cardboard box 4 feet long that was invisible?! Not!

I’ve been complaining to the USPS for years about the service and treatment at this PO. Nothing changes. When My daughter’s college ring never arrived from the engraver, I called them and they told me the ring had been returned by the local PO because there was no such address. He read the address to me, and it was, in fact, my correct address. I Especially love it when I go to pick up a package and they tell me to wait another couple of days because it hasn’t been delivered from VH yet. I go back 2 days later and they said they returned it because I didn’t show up to get it.

I feel your pain, Edg is the worst Post Office in the country and it isn't even close. I have lived in Edg for 11 years and the smartest thing I ever did was keep my West Tisbury PO box! I have no idea how those people keep their jobs, the disfunction is beyond comprehension!

I sent my son's vital records and cash from Maryland to Oak Bluffs, to a specific post office box, and it was forwarded to a summer resident who resides in California. I had to pay more money to have it sent back!!!! Not okay. Never experienced these types of issues before.

I have even changed my auto registrations and all bills to my off-island address since this dysfunctional operation never gets it right. It never has. And it never will. I keep the expensive PO box as a last resort if I need to have a legal mailing address here. Since I'm gone a few days per week I don't use RFD delivery as I don't want my mail sitting out in a box. Just wondering if anyone has an comments, good or bad, about RFD delivery in Edg.??
