Tisbury Begins Second Night; School Decision Looms

The Tisbury annual town meeting reconvened for a second night Wednesday with tensions running high over the $46.6 million school question.

The Tisbury annual town meeting reconvened for a second night Wednesday with tensions running high over the $46.6 million school question.

More than 300 voters filed into the school gymnasium and the meeting got underway a short time after 7 p.m.

Debate began on the school on Tuesday night, the opening night for town meeting, revealing a deeply divided town.

Debate continued Wednesday as proponent and opponents of the school article squared off.

Moderator Deborah Medders presided, making it clear that she intended to move the meeting along.

"If you have a question, pose it, do not plan to get into a Q & A. We do not have time for that," she said.

For a second night running, long lines formed at all the mics.

Either way, this discussion is long overdue. The building committee never looked seriously at a renovation, neither did they answer questions on the subject. They took the assessment of the architects at face value without preparing a feasibility study as the original article of 2016 stated they would.
They have spent their time and our money chasing a dream that is not shared by the taxpayers. That’s a bad way to start a major building project in Tisbury. What we do agree on is that there are space needs at the Tisbury School. Can we have a project that the town supports? Yes, but it will have to be started over.
