Lee Fierro, a longtime Island resident and member of the Island’s theatre community, is leaving the Vineyard soon to start a new chapter in Ohio.
Her many Island friends and admirers will get a chance to say bon voyage at a farewell Tea for Lee on Sunday, June 4 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Vineyard Playhouse on Church street in Vineyard Haven.
Ms. Fierro has lived on the Island for 43 years and is well-known by many, particularly for her work on the stage and behind the scenes as an actor, director, writer, and children’s theater teacher. She had been artistic director of the Island Theatre Workshop since 1974, guiding many performances and influencing the lives of actors of all ages.
She is also well-known for her role as the grieving mother Mrs. Kintner in the movie Jaws.
The Island Theatre Workshop and the Vineyard Playhouse invite all to come by Sunday to wish her well.

Lee Fierro has, indeed,
Bob Dutton Oak BluffsLee Fierro has, indeed, influenced many, many people as actress, director, writer and producer on the island -- me included.
Sometime in the late 1980s, I was cast against Lee in a production of NIGHT MUST FALL that was performed at the Playhouse. In the show, as Lee's character sat in a wheelchair, my character smothered her to death with a pillow. Lee was up for performing a dramatic death (with the audience gasping at the brutality of the act), I as executioner. And as awful as her character was on-stage, Lee was, and still is, a delight -- full of encouragement and good humor.
She will be missed.
Lee directed 5 other
Mari Coastal New EnglandLee directed 5 other actresses and myself in an all-female production entitled "Belles" at the Cornell back in 1990 (I think. Still have the review clipping somewhere.) Can one imagine an all-female production of anything happening now without a backlash from angry males? Lee was a fearless director, as I recall, commanding me at every rehearsal to "Stop making those faces!" My part was an addled, childless ventriloquist who believed that her dummy was her son, but I had to act it "straight". It paid off. My lines got most of the laughs in that show because I managed to do it deadpan after weeks of diligent practice, practice, practice. Thanks, Lee, for bringing out the serious comedienne in me. Nobody else could ever do that, before or since. Wish I could go to the Tea for Lee to thank her, personally. Best wishes for the next phase of your creative journey. Break a leg!

Of course I know her from her
Cameron Ladd San Jose, CaliforniaOf course I know her from her memorable role in Jaws (what great casting instincts Spielberg showed wanting her to play Mrs. Kintner). But additionally, I've viewed her MV Theater page and seen she's been involved with Gilbert and Sullivan productions as well as a play based on Rashomon. I'm a fan of G&S as well as Kurosawa (and Spielberg's Grandaddy of Summer blockbusters, which is one of my faves), and would love to have seen any of those productions.
I wish her all the best in this new chapter in her life.
