Sengekontacket Pond is closed to all shellfishing for six days because of rain.

The Oak Bluffs shellfish department said in an alert that the heavy rainfall that fell on the Vineyard Tuesday morning has triggered a pond closure. Saltwater ponds are closed to shellfishing for several days after heavy rain per state mandate; pollutants can be washed into the pond from roads and sources like waterfowl.

The earliest the pond can reopen is Monday, July 11.
