Body of Missing Fisherman Recovered Off Nantucket

The body of a fisherman who went missing Monday morning off the coast of Nantucket has been recovered, according to the Coast Guard. The fisherman was swept overboard from the vessel No Regrets, which is based on the Vineyard.

Nantucket police chief William Pittman identified the man as Luke Gurney, the owner of the boat.

“Everything appears accidental at this point,” Mr. Pittman said. He said the medical examiner has taken the case and is looking into the cause of death.

No Regrets is homeported in Oak Bluffs, the Coast Guard said. It is often docked in Vineyard Haven.

According to a news release from the Coast Guard, sector New England received a report at 9:15 a.m. that a fisherman aboard the 42-foot fishing vessel No Regrets became entangled in the boat’s nets as they were deployed and was swept over the side of the vessel.

The incident occurred about a quarter mile west of Great Point on Nantucket.

The Coast Guard launched a four-hour search, which included air crews from Air Station Cape Cod, two boats from Station Brant point, and assistance from the Coast Guard Station Chatham, the Nantucket harbor master, the Chatham harbor master, Chatham fire dive team, Harwich regional dive team, state police, and three good Samaritan vessels.

The search ended around 1 p.m.

“Our thoughts go out to the family of the victim and the entire fishing community who is affected by this tragedy,” Cmdr. Marcus Gherardi, chief of response for Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England, said in a press release.

“Anytime we are not able to accomplish our goal of saving lives, we are deeply saddened as we also take it to heart.”

Such a heavy heart for the Gurney family. Luke was a great dad, husband, brother, son and friend. He always went out of his way when we visited to make sure the kids had fun on the Vineyard either tubing in the lagoon, out on the boat or smores on the deck. Luke you will be forever missed by many. may you rest in peace and may your sons, wife, family and friends cherish the memories they have of you and bring comfort to their sadness.
